Why does a pregnancy test need to be performed?

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels are elevated during pregnancy. The pregnancy test provided detects the presence of hCG in urine. It is important to perform a pregnancy test 3 weeks after your pregnancy loss to check your hCG levels. The result of this test will help determine whether further investigations and/or treatment is required.

The pregnancy test kit

How to perform the pregnancy test

  1. Your first morning urine is usually the most concentrated of the day and will have the most hCG in it. Use of this sample will help avoid ‘false negative’ results. Collect your first morning urine sample into the container provided.
  2. Remove the test wand from the foil pouch and remove the purple cap (A). The test must be used within 1 hour after it has been removed from the pouch.
  3. Hold the test wand by the test handle (B) and immerse the tip in the urine sample for 15 seconds, up to, but not beyond the arrow.
  4. Remove the tip from the urine sample and immediately re-cap with the purple cap.
  5. Lay the test wand on a flat surface with the test and control window facing up and then begin timing.
  6. Determine your test result between 5 and 10 minutes after recapping the test wand.

How to interpret the results and what does this mean

Negative

A single red line next to the control (C) window indicates a negative result. If you are still experiencing bleeding or other symptoms (for example, pelvic pain or fever), then please contact the gynaecology clinic for further advice.

Positive

The presence of two red lines indicates a positive result. If the pregnancy test is positive, please contact the gynaecology clinic for further advice.

Invalid

A single red line next to the test (T) window, or no line development, indicates an invalid result. If your test is invalid, a repeat test will be required. Please contact the gynaecology clinic to arrange collection of a repeat test.
