Why has my child been referred to the low vision clinic?
Your child has been referred to the multi-disciplinary low vision clinic for a full assessment of their ‘functional’ vision. This is an assessment of how your child uses their vision in everyday situations.
The team will work with you and your child to find ways to promote and develop their vision and provide support both at home and at nursery or school.
Who will be present at the appointment?
There will be:
- the specialist orthoptist
- your child’s teacher for the sensory impaired
What does the specialist orthoptist do?
The orthoptist will assess your child’s vision and discuss various ways in which it can be enhanced and maximised. This may rely on visual stimulation, the use of visual aids, specific lighting or advice on posture. Any visual aid that is recommended will be specifically suited to your child’s needs.
What will the teacher for the visually impaired do?
The teacher will discuss with you and the orthoptist how best to use any recommended programme of visual stimulation or specific visual aid. They will work with you and your child’s carers, nursery or school and show them ways to promote your child’s visual development.
How long is my appointment?
Your appointment will last 1 hour.
Will my child need eye drops?
There will be no eye drops needed at this appointment.
