Our NHS charities turn 30, column by Dani Cecchini, Non-Executive Director at Lincolnshire Community and Hospitals NHS Group

Our Lincolnshire health charities are celebrating their 30th anniversaries – a combined 60 years of transforming healthcare for patients, families and the staff that care for them across the county.

The difference these charities make is seen daily. Last year they invested over £1.5 million in equipment and services, from vital body cooling machines saving newborns from brain damage, and pioneering innovations helping patients with head and neck cancers cope better with their radiotherapy treatments, to special end-of-life comfort packs for patients and families, supporting them during this difficult time.

As part of my role as a non-executive director for Lincolnshire Community and Hospitals NHS Group (LCHG), and due to my finance background, I am a trustee for our two charities. Oversight of the charities is through the Charitable Funds Committee on behalf of the LCHG Board of directors.

LCHG comprises two organisations, Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust (LCHS) and United Lincolnshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (ULTH) and we have two charities, Lincolnshire NHS Charity for our community trust (and the local mental health trust, Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust) and United Lincolnshire Hospitals Charity for our acute hospitals.

Both charities exist to enhance the healthcare experience in Lincolnshire, funding equipment and activities not normally purchased by the NHS; the little extras that make a big difference.

To celebrate their milestone anniversaries, the charities and their supporters have been busy raising money through various exciting challenges. Lincolnshire NHS Charity’s walking challenge around the Edale skyline in the Peak District raised over £5,000, and they have a charity skydive planned for later in the year.

Meanwhile over 40 people are taking on the United Lincolnshire Hospitals Charity’s Snowdon Sunrise Challenge later this month.

Many past patients are also busy fundraising. Stroke survivor Ross Kaye has walked from his home back to Lincoln County Hospital’s Stroke Unit to meet the team who cared for him. He has already raised over £2,600 to fund improvements to the unit.

I am so proud of the invaluable service our charities provide, and I give thanks to the generosity of businesses, organisations and the people of Lincolnshire which allows us to provide such unwavering support. This means our patients can benefit from the best care, treatment and experience possible.
