Providing compassionate, dignified end of life care is something our teams take incredibly seriously, and I am so pleased that this commitment has recently been recognised by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
Following its inspection of end-of-life care services at Grantham and District Hospital in March 2026, the CQC rated the service Good overall, with the Caring domain improving from Good to Outstanding.
This is a wonderful achievement and reflects the kindness, compassion and professionalism our colleagues show every day.
The inspectors recognised the way our teams treat patients with dignity and respect, involve families in decisions and provide personalised care that reflects each person’s individual needs and wishes. They also highlighted the strong partnership working between our hospital teams, community services and specialist palliative care colleagues, helping to ensure patients and families receive joined-up care and support when they need it most.
This recognition belongs to everyone who contributes to end-of-life care. That includes our clinical and non-clinical colleagues, volunteers and partners across the community. Every person has an important role in helping patients and families feel cared for, listened to and supported.
Receiving an Outstanding rating for Caring is something we should be incredibly proud of. It is also an opportunity to reflect on what is working well and how we can continue to improve. We know there is always more we can do, and we remain committed to listening to patients, families and colleagues, learning from their experiences and continuing to strengthen our services.
Healthcare is about much more than buildings, systems or technology. At its heart are people caring for people, often at the most vulnerable and emotional points in their lives.
This report is a reminder of the difference that kindness, teamwork and professionalism make every day across our hospitals and community services.
