Column by Paul Clark, Community Diagnostic Centres Clinical Lead at ULTH

Over the last four years, we’ve had the pleasure of welcoming thousands of people to our Grantham Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC).

In the last year alone (2025/26), the Grantham CDC team were responsible for delivering almost 35,000 diagnostic tests to support patients’ ongoing care.

These are tests, such as X-rays, CT, MRI or ultrasound imaging to name a few, that may have previously meant travelling to a large hospital site across Lincolnshire, where fellow patients might have been attending in an emergency or for a planned appointment.

At our CDCs, it’s still the same NHS teams looking after you, using the same digital systems, but away from the hustle and bustle of a busy hospital and without emergency cases potentially impacting your appointment times.

The CDC is a more relaxed and modern environment, with its own free car park directly outside the clinic entrance.

As we reflect on reaching our fourth anniversary, it’s been a privilege to read the fantastic and overwhelmingly positive feedback we’ve received from the local community.

It is this success that has helped us to grow in both facilities and the services on offer.

In 2024, a £5 million investment allowed us to introduce state-of-the-art CT and MRI scanners, and, just last month, we were able to open three new clinic rooms as part of a £200,000 development to make better use of what was a very large waiting room.

Among the new services added as a result of this additional space is fibroscanning, a type of ultrasound which looks at inflammation in your liver. Ongoing partnership working with GPs in Lincolnshire also means your local GP can refer directly to this service, making it quicker and easier than ever to get the tests you need.

The wider impact of the success of Grantham CDC has allowed United Lincolnshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust to successfully bid for other CDCs in the county.

Skegness and Lincoln’s facilities opened in November and December 2024 respectively, and a fourth CDC in Boston is due to be completed in spring 2027, on the site of the former football ground on York Street.

These are all great improvements for patients in Lincolnshire and we’re looking forward to seeing what a fifth year caring for patients at Grantham CDC will bring.
