A loving husband has thanked hospital staff for his wife’s care by holding a charity darts tournament in her memory.

Tony Brown, from Gainsborough held a darts tournament last year and raised £1,050 for United Lincolnshire Hospitals Charity as his way to say thank you for the care his wife, Sonya, received after she was diagnosed with lung cancer in July 2024.

Sadly, Sonya died five months later but Tony is full of praise for exemplary care shown by the teams on the Medical Emergency Assessment Unit and Waddington Ward at Lincoln County Hospital, where Sonya was treated. He said: “Everyone was fantastic, they gave Sonya so much time during her visits to the hospital, the support they gave to Sonya and me was amazing.”

Tony held the darts tournament at Hill Top Social and Recreational Club in Gainsborough to give something back to the staff for their care and was overwhelmed that so many people took part: “Thanks to the incredible prizes donated by local businesses and organisations we raised £1,050 for United Lincolnshire Hospitals Charity which will be used to help provide care for other lung cancer patients.”

Sarah Civello is the hospital’s Lead MacMillan Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist and remembers treating Sonya on the ward. She recalls: “”She was truly a remarkable lady, and it is a privilege to care for patients and families as wonderful as the Browns.”

“We as a team always want to give the very best to our patients and their loved ones through their difficult journey, and this generous donation will help us provide those special little touches that go beyond what our NHS budgets can cover. A huge thank you.”

Tony recently met up with Sarah and other members of the team that cared for Sonya recently when he presented a cheque to Kathryn Helley, Group Chief Clinical Governance Officer at Lincolnshire Community and Hospitals NHS Group.

United Lincolnshire Hospitals Charity Fundraiser, Connor Hill, expressed his thanks to Tony and said: “This generosity is much appreciated and will help us continue to provide those additional extras that will help improve the care of our patients and their families across Lincolnshire hospitals.”
