Orthodontics is a specialist field of dentistry which deals with irregularities of the teeth and jaws. The hospital orthodontic service provides treatment for patients with complex malocclusions (tricky bites) or medical issues. In addition to this, we provide advice and opinions to dental practitioners, medical practitioners and community dental officers as well as liaison with specialist practitioners and dentists with a special interest in orthodontic treatment.
We provide orthodontic services at both Lincoln County Hospital and Grantham District Hospital, with an outreach spoke hospital at Louth County Hospital. The service also provides liaison and joint treatment with hospital consultants including maxillofacial surgeons, plastic surgeons, paediatric dentists and restorative dental surgeons.
Our clinicians provide specialist treatment for patients with severe and high complex dental conditions. The majority of these patients require multi-specialty treatment for the following reasons:
- patients with severe jaw deformities who require combined orthodontic and surgical treatment
- patients born with cleft lip and palate or developmental conditions
- impacted and displaced teeth and other tooth development problems
The orthodontic department also has a teaching and training role for specialist registrars and dental practitioners with a special interest in orthodontic treatment.

The Orthodontic Team
Our fantastic team consists of Consultant Orthodontists, Associate specialists, Orthodontic Therapists and Orthodontic Nurses. We also have visiting clinicians (Dentists with Special Interest) who contribute hugely to supporting our clinical service. We are supported by our own reception team and secretarial staff.
Consultants
Orthodontic therapists
We have two orthodontic therapists, one of whom is currently nearing the end of her training, who treat even the most complex cases and really help to increase the numbers of patients we are able to accept for treatment in the hospital service. The therapists work under prescription and close supervision of one of our Specialists or Consultants.
