Children’s Macmillan Nurses

Our children’s Macmillan nurse specialists support any child/young person with a cancer or leukaemia diagnosis across Lincolnshire and have close links with their treatment centre and shared care centre to ensure a holistic, needs led approach to care and support.

They will also

  • Oversee and provide expert advice on care, treatment and managing side effects
  • Provide emotional and psycho-social support through home visits or telephone contact
  • Home visits to provide direct nursing care and advice in conjunction with the community children’s nurses
  • Liaise closely with the treatment centres to ensure continuation of care and, where possible, enable care to be provided at home
  • Provide information to a child’s school/nursery to help them integrate back into school
  • Provide information and advice regarding diagnosis and treatment to their GP and/or other healthcare professionals as required
  • Co-ordination of local service and support for any child with a brain tumour who requires rehabilitation in conjunction with their neuro-oncology key worker
  • Work closely with the Specialist Family Practitioner Team to ensure families receive additional support if required
  • Work with the children’s palliative care nurse specialist to obtain advice, support and symptom management for any child requiring palliative care
  • The lead Macmillan nurse will be responsible for liaising with your child’s treatment centre, co-ordinating the monthly local MDT meetings and sharing relevant information with other services
  • Providing oncology advice, support and training to nursing and medical teams on the wards
