Please be aware that you may need to inform your car insurance company of your recent operation. You are not able to drive straight after your surgery, please seek advice from your consultant as to when you are able to start driving again.

Before getting into the car:

  • Position the car away from the kerb so there is less of a drop to negotiate.
  • Have someone position the seat so it is a far back as it will go.
  • Partially recline the back of the seat.
  • You are able to place a cushion/pillow on low seats if required to ensure your hips are above your knees.

Sitting down:

  • Stand with your back to the car.
  • Back up to the car with your walking aid to support you until you feel the seat with the back of your legs.
  • Use the dashboard and side of the car for support when lowering yourself onto the seat.
  • Lower yourself slowly onto the seat, keeping your operated leg slightly extended.

Bringing legs into the car:

  • Lift yourself backwards so you are central on the seat.
  • Lift your legs one at a time into the car, ensuring you move your body rather than twisting so you are facing the dashboard.

To transfer out of the car, follow the above in reverse order.

Always use the car for support when standing and lowering yourself in and out of the car rather than your walking aid for support.
