It kills cancer cells by cell damaging them, hence they cannot undergo further cell division and spread. Some chemotherapy drugs can an interrupt chemical process involved in cell division.

There are different types of chemotherapy such as curative chemotherapy which cures cancer completely and it can be used to reduce the risk of cancer returning or relieve symptoms.  Chemotherapy can be used along with radiotherapy to treat cancer.
