Staff praised as ambulance handover changes make a big difference

Despite the number of patients visiting our A&Es being significantly higher than expected at all of our sites and a lot higher than the same time last year, performance on ambulance handovers in May was some of the best since early 2017.

Improvements are on track to deliver national performance, less than 1% of 120 minute delays by the end of July 2018.

The number of patients arriving by ambulance increased during the month, however data from prior to the launch of our handover project showed that even with fewer conveyances our previous performance was still below expectations.

May numbers show that with relatively high ambulance arrivals and many challenges, improved handover times can still largely be maintained.  In fact the teams have managed to shave an average of 24 minutes off of every handover.

Director of Operations Simon Evans said: “There is still work to be done, but it is great for our teams to see the results of all of their hard work. The turnaround we are seeing is impressive and we are on track to soon be in line with national performance. Well done to everyone involved and let’s keep up the hard work.”
