Lincolnshire children have been putting their creative skills to good use to help brighten the walls at Lincoln County Hospital. Students from Lincoln Minster School were invited to enter a competition to create artwork for a new bereavement centre, due to open at the hospital in the coming months.

Thirteen paintings, sketches and collages were judged in the chapel at the hospital. The three winning pieces of artwork were created by students Olivia Wietrak (8), Priyaa Gupta (7) and Sheba Nicholson (10). They will be displayed in the entrance of the new centre.

Judging the competition, Michelle Rhodes, Director of Nursing for United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “It was a really tough decision, I was overwhelmed with the level of creativity from all the students.

“All the pieces entered into the competition will be framed and used in the hospital. I hope that the artwork will help to create a calming environment for all using the bereavement centre.”

Fiona Thomas, Head of Lincoln Minster Preparatory School said: “Art talks to us all in many different ways. At LMS Prep we are honoured that the drawings and paintings of our pupils will speak to those in most need of comfort and solace.”

Ruth Birkinshaw, Bereavement Coordinator for United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust said: “The new bereavement centre will be a welcome addition to the hospital. It will provide a quiet and calm environment for people who have been bereaved. The new centre will offer a full bereavement service for relatives, which will mean one appointment at the centre will take care of all requirements.

“Advice and support from our dedicated team of staff will be available and going forward it is hoped a registrar will be based in the centre who will also register deaths.”
