Dr Fernandez completed his specialist training on the Wessex Deanery Cardiology Rotation with additional sub-specialist training in intervention at two renowned cardiac units, Southampton University Hospital and the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. He has experience of novel ways of doing day-case work, the development of heart attack services and experience with new interventional techniques. He worked as a Locum Consultant Cardiologist for Southampton University Hospitals and United Lincolnshire Hospitals prior to his current appointment.
Dr Fernandez is a General Cardiologist specialising in all aspects of Cardiology including Heart Failure, Valve Disease, Arrhythmias and Structural Heart Disease with a subspecialty training in Interventional Cardiology including Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) using the transradial (doing procedures through the wrist, which is both safer and more comfortable for patients) and transfemoral approaches.
He also specialises in intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) to facilitate lesion assessment and optimize stent deployment as well as the use of pressure wires (FFR/iFR) to determine physiological significance of a lesion to decide if it requires stenting.
In addition he specialises in all aspects of complex intervention including bifurcations, rotational atherectomy to treat heavily calcified coronary arteries, laser coronary atherectomy and he is trained in Cardiac CT & CT coronary angiography. He also has a keen interest in treating chronic total occlusions – CTO’s (longstanding blockages).
