Patient and public involvement
Putting patients first is a priority for United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust. Involving members of the public, patients and their carers in developing and evaluating health services is an integral part in ensuring the care in our hospitals is high quality and patient focused. The Trust has a strategy for Patient and Public Involvement which states "we welcome the opportunity of learning from patient and public involvement and consider this to be fundamental to our philosophy".
The benefits of patient involvement include
- Increased patient satisfaction
- Enhanced sense of self esteem and empowerment to control health
- More accessible, sensitive and responsive health services
- Better understanding by the public of how the NHS operates
- Better relationships between health services and the public
- Greater sense of ownership of the NHS
- More appropriate use of health services
- Shared responsibilities for health care between NHS services and the public
- A health service that is based on patients' needs, not the needs of the health service
The ambition and challenge for the NHS over the next few years is to deliver services that give patients more choice, more personalised care and real empowerment of people to improve their health. This requires a fundamental change in the relationships between health services and the patients and public that they serve. We need to move from a service that does things to and for patients, to a service that is truly patient led, where the service works with patients to support them with their health needs.
Engaging patients and service users may not always be a comfortable experience for health care professionals, and we don’t always get told what we want to hear, but without your views and opinions, we cannot hope to ensure that our service is truly patient led.
Use the "Go to..." in the menu box (above, right) to discover ways in which you can become involved.
Public Consultation – Health Passport for Vulnerable Patients
As part of the Trust’s improving the hospital experience for patient’s programme, we have developed a patient passport for vulnerable patients. We would very much welcome comments and suggestions from patients, relatives or carers on the vulnerable adult passport. We have attached a questionnaire for you to make your comments together with details of how to return it. We would be grateful if you could also share the passport with any relevant groups/meetings you attend.
