General practice attachments in the training practices

There is a wide variety of excellent training practices available for the general practice attachments, ranging from rural dispensing practices in village or market towns to urban practices in Lincoln.

Your GP trainer will be acting as your educational supervisor throughout the three-year programme and will therefore maintain contact with you throughout your time with us.

Please see the practices' introductory descriptions below, many of the training practices also have their own website. To request the full Lincoln programme booklet, please e-mail the Programme Manager julia.thornley@ulh.nhs.uk.

The Birchwood Medical Practice, Lincoln is fully computerised ‘paperlite’ and has a list size of approximately 8,790 patients. There are five partners and a salaried GP, three of the GPs have a special interest: these are in gynaecology, urology and dermatology. It has been a training practice for over 15 years and as well as the GP Specialty Training Programme accepts Year 2 Foundation doctors, 5th year medical students and student nurses.

The practice is likely to appeal to registrars who would like to be based near the centre of the town with access to all the facilities of Lincoln. It provides an excellent training environment very typical of general practice as a whole and considerable help and support will be available during the attachment. The training has been rated very highly by our recent registrars who have all sat the MRCGP exam.

Market Rasen Surgery

Doctors Eames, Telfer, Weeks, Nation and Morris
Mill Road, Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, LN8 3BP
Tel: (01673) 843556

Trainer: Dr James Telfer

The practice has been training for over 20 years and has always been popular with GP registrars. This is partly due to the friendly informal atmosphere, and also the very supportive trainer, partners and staff. Learning needs are assessed early on to help develop a training plan, with tutorials being held weekly. There are also regular debriefs and discussion and the use of video for consultation analysis.

The surgery is purpose built with its own operating theatre plus dedicated GP registrar room, and also houses our excellent district staff. We are fully computerised, and have recently upgraded to “SystmOne”.

The GP registrar’s workload and surgeries start off at a slow pace and gradually pick up with growing experience and ability. There is also protected time for study and any project work. The practice appreciates that GP registrars come to learn rather than simply act as another partner!
