Specialist Rehabilitation

Specialised rehabilitation services provided in Lincolnshire’s hospitals include the Lincolnshire rehabilitation medicine service, the Lincolnshire orthotic service and Lincolnshire wheelchair service.

Each of these is a discrete service with their own staff, service delivery responsibilities and service accommodation. Each service has a pan Trust responsibility and operates from a variety of locations across Lincolnshire. The services are part of the emergency care directorate for Lincoln, Louth, Grantham.

The service manager is responsible for operational and clinical management of these services (the rehabilitation medicine service is managed in partnership with consultants).

The main hub for the management and administration of the service is based within the Occupational Therapy Department at Lincoln County Hospital.

Rehabilitation medicine service

The rehabilitation medicine service provides countywide inpatient, outpatient and community rehabilitation outreach services to adults with recent and long term physical disabilities. Rehabilitation is a whole team process provided in a variety of settings.

The caseload is predominantly people with congenital or acquired neurological disorders with the most common conditions being multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease and acquired brain injury.

Lincolnshire wheelchair service

The Lincolnshire wheelchair service provides a comprehensive countywide wheelchair and special seating service.

This service involves the assessment for provision, the supply of standard and special non-powered wheelchairs, powered wheelchairs, special seating, pressure relieving cushions, wheelchair voucher scheme and a comprehensive in-house repair and maintenance service.

The service is managed on three sites: Turnpike Close, Grantham, Occupational Therapy Department, Lincoln County Hospital and the Lincoln repair workshop, 5/7 Dean Road, Lincoln.

Assessments take place at weekly wheelchair clinics, monthly special seating clinics or home visits.

Lincolnshire orthotic service

The Lincolnshire orthotic service provides a comprehensive countywide orthotic, appliance and wig service.

The service includes assessment by qualified orthotists, ordering and supply of orthoses, appliances and wigs, stock management and repair and adaptation of footwear. The orthotic service is delivered across nine sites with four admin bases.
